Over the past 3 weeks, we have looked at 3 leadership styles. You can read up on them here.
The styles have been 1) Leading Through Process; 2) Leading Through Direct Involvement; 3) Leading Through Global Vision; and this 4th one is Leading Through a Combination of the First and Second Styles.
There is a key point to consider here, for it is how the styles of 1 & 2 actually get worked out in practicality. For new subordinates or when delegating a new project, this style will begin to lead through their personal involvement. Once they perceive that the person is functioning well, they will revert and lead through process. However, they can step back in and lead through involvement, when they perceive that the person is struggling.
It is an empowering style, though a leader with this combination needs to have a clear understanding of the diversity of the needs of those whom they lead. Some need to be led through process and some need to be led through a direct coaching style. The weaknesses are not having this clarity and as a result not meeting the needs of those you lead.
Again, self awareness is absolutely crucial; do you know your style?
